Hello, I’m Lianne (she/her)! I’m a New Jersey-based botanical illustrator with a passion for spreading knowledge and appreciation of the natural world. As a hobbyist gardener and lover of the outdoors, I seek to create work that captures the beauty and wonder of the world we belong to through storytelling, botanical studies, and even products. I'm always looking for new ways to engage viewers (and myself) with the environment around us, and am currently seeking opportunities in publishing, surface design, and science communication.

RESOURCES! Including sustainability, suppliers, and favorite materials:

SUSTAINABILITY

As a small business owner and artist who draws inspiration directly from the natural world, sustainability is incredibly important to me! Over the past few years of owning my business, I have taken into account the waste my business produces and have made changes to my products, packaging, and shipping materials in order to reflect my personal sustainable values.

As of 2020, nearly all of my packaging is either recyclable, made from recyclable materials, made of responsibly sourced paper, or biodegradable. I have made the switch from vinyl stickers to eco-friendly recyclable paper ones, from regular art prints to recycled paper art prints, and have transitioned from creating enamel or acrylic pins to responsibly-sourced wooden pins. In the interest of spreading more sustainable practices to other businesses and to maintain transparency with my like-minded customers, I’d like to share my list of suppliers and what products I use from them in order to grow my business with less environmental impact. A more complete list is available to my Clover tiers on Patreon.

PRODUCTS / FREEBIES

  • SCREEN PRINTING - Black Collar Screen Printing (Based in Baltimore, MD) https://blackcollarprinting.com/ - Great local printer that I can pick up from to cut down on shipping-related emissions. I print bandanas and tote bags with Black Collar.

  • SCREEN PRINTING - Mustard Beetle Handmade (Based in Los Angeles, CA) https://www.mustardbeetle.com/ - An amazing, one-person operation that does custom printing for businesses and creates quality illustrated goods. I print bandanas with Mustard Beetle.

  • RISOGRAPH PRINTING - Lucky Pocket Press (Based in Baltimore, MD) https://www.luckypocketpress.com/ - Risograph is a sustainable, economical printing option that uses rice-based ink to print. Lucky Pocket Press is an amazing local printer and publisher of indie comics that I can pick up from to cut down on shipping-related emissions! I print art prints, business cards, thank you cards, and freebies with LPP.

  • BUSINESS CARDS / THANKS CARDS - GotPrint (Based in Burbank, CA) - I order using their 100lb. Recycled Matte Cover paper option.

  • WASHI TAPE - The Washi Mill (Based in Guangdong, China) https://www.craftwashitape.com/ - A trusted washi tape manufacturer with low-plastic packaging options.

PACKAGING

  • MAILERS - EcoEnclose (Based in the USA) https://www.ecoenclose.com/ - I specifically use the recycled, recyclable, and naturally biodegradable padded, rigid, and apparel mailers for shipping.

  • GLASSINE BAGS - Nashville Wraps (Based in the USA) https://www.nashvillewraps.com/ - Glassine is a water resistant, curbside recyclable, and biodegradable material made out of paper. It’s a great alternative to plastic!

  • PLASTIC PRINT SLEEVES - EcoEnclose (Based in the USA) https://www.ecoenclose.com/ - I use their recycled (and recyclable) clear flap-and-seal poly bags for risograph prints.

  • PAPER SLEEVES - Nashville Wraps (Based in the USA) https://www.nashvillewraps.com/ - I use their Brown Kraft Merchandise Bags, which are curbside recyclable. I use these to protect digital art prints rather than plastic.

  • CARDBOARD BACKING - EcoEnclose (Based in the USA) https://www.ecoenclose.com/ - I use their 23B custom cardboard pads to back prints. This option is a bit hidden on their website - My friend Kevin Jay Stanton kindly pointed it out to me when I was looking for an alternative cardboard supplier!! Go to their “Custom Shipping Boxes” tab, then select the “PAD” option. You can input the exact measurements you need so you don’t have to worry about trimming the cardboard inserts yourself!

  • SHIPPING LABELS - EcoEnclose (Based in the USA) https://www.ecoenclose.com/ - I use their standard, high-tack labels which unfortunately isn’t necessarily a sustainable label option (because of the mailers I use, the high-tack option is the most secure) but EcoEnclose offers a zero waste label option.

  • PAPER - French Paper (Based in Niles, MI) https://www.frenchpaper.com/ - French Paper only uses renewable, green energy to produce their high-quality papers and offer an incredible selection of recycled papers. I mostly use their papers for risograph or screen printing.

I hope that by sharing this list, owning a more sustainable business feels more accessible and attainable for anyone looking for more environmentally friendly options, but maybe don’t know where to start. These are the companies I’ve personally been satisfied with, but I’m always open for suggestions or recommendations for other companies I can source from. As artists, I believe it’s important for us to be aware of and diminish our environmental footprints whenever possible, and sharing resources among our community helps make that goal more realistic for everyone!
